Wow..Awesome capture. That tree looks like it could get up and walk on it's own. Congratulations. :)

Behind The Lens

Location

On the campus of Pepperdine University in California.

Time

In the afternoon around 3:00 p.m. Date: 4/6/2008

Lighting

Sunny day, natural lilght.

Equipment

Hand-held Nikon D70S. Zoom lens (18-70 mm) at 18mm.

Inspiration

Well, as you can see, it's a magnificent tree. I could not NOT photograph it.

Editing

Yes, I did Photoshop the image. In PSC5, I carefully selected the tree with the quick-selection tool. I used the "fine Grain" filter on the non-selected areas.

In my camera bag

Currently, I carry a Nikon D300S with an 18-200 mm zoom lens. I also have a Nikkor 70-300 mm lens plus a LensBaby set. My flash is a Nikon SB-600 speedlight. I have a tripod (though used only occasionally). I also have a remote cable shutter release for when I'm using the tripod.

Feedback

My advise: Take lots of pictures when you come upon a a great subject. I recommend bracketing your shots so as not to miss the best exposure. And in the same vein, the backet set (I typically take three exposures) can be used for HDL (High Dynamnic Range) processing later if desired. Also, try different angles and viewpoints wherever possible. And one last thought: if somethilng is even only mildly interesting at the time, take a picture or two. I can't tell you how many times an "Oh-what-the-heck" shot later turned out to be a pleasant suprise and even a contest contender. John D. Marks (jdmarks64@aol.com)
