Having young children at school and one at home, it is hard to just go anywhere and anytime to take photos. I really enjoy taking photos of nature and flowers. Even though we have a small house and backyard, we are able to grow Agave plants as Gladstone is a very hot and dry place. We have a few of these plants in our backyard so whenever I feel the need to take a image of flowers and plants, I always go outside first before I go anywhere else. I love my backyard as there is so much to discover in it everyday.Time
I took this image during the golden hour of 5:33pm. It was a beautiful day and it was raining, but not heavy, just few showers and the sun broke out of the sky and lit up the droplets of water on the plants. I couldn't resist so I took an umbrella and went out with took several photos.Lighting
For this image, I only used natural light by shooting into the direction of the sun. The sun shone as the clouds cleared, but as there were a few showers still falling, they lit up beautifully. I love shooting into the direction of the sun and using fill lighting to fill out the shadows, however, in this instance, there was sufficient light to get the effect I was after.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 5DMKIII, a Canon 50mm f/1.8II, and an extension tube. No flash or tripod was used.Inspiration
I love photographing water droplets but wanted to play around with a very narrow dept of field and bokeh. I figured that the showers will add another dimension to the image and give it more impact compared to your standard bokeh/waterdroplet shots.Editing
I process my images in Adobe Lightroom. I adjust the highlights and shadows. Because I shoot in Raw, I adjusted the Whitebalance to give it a cooler look. I don't recall the exact details. I then, add a little sharpening in photoshop. In my camera bag
Because I have young children and am always on the lookout for a good shot, I always have the Canon 24-105mm attached to my Canon 5DMKIII. Recently, I have replaced it with my cheap canon 50mm f/1.8 . I absolutely love this lense and hope to add an 85mm to my kit bag.Feedback
Don't be afraid of the rain. I always have an umbrella handy so when I see a great image, I am able to try and capture. Weather is your friend and if you are willing to go out in weather that puts most photographers, you will see and capture some amazing images. Don't be afraid - the better prepared you are for it, the more you will enjoy the experience.
