Beautiful detail. The coloring of the bird really works with the background!

Behind The Lens

Location

This is a shot of a hawk that I took one day while walking around Edinburgh city and specifically in the touristic area of Royal Mile. The bird was on the hand of a lady who was holding it to attract the attention of tourist and people passing by.

Time

It was an afternoon while I was showing the city around to a friend that had visited me in Edinburgh. We both love animals so we couldnt resist and stopped to see it. We as well held the bird on our hands afterwards!

Lighting

The shot was taken under daylight so all the adjustments had to be made in the camera. I always like to shoot in manual and adjust my setting for the optimum result. I try to reduce my ISO as much as I can to avoid having noise in the picture and I compensate with a slow shutterspeed as well.

Equipment

I used a canon EOS 1100D, with zoom lens EF-S 18-55mm. The shot was in manual.

Inspiration

It was a sponateneous moment where I was taking shots of sights around the city and this particular creature captured my attention with its beautiful fur and its wild eyes looking at the people passing by.

Editing

I edit the photo in RAW, changed a bit the light, the shadows, the clarity and gave some touch ups to the colours in photoshop.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my canon EOS 1100D with the zoom lens and depending on what I want to shoot I used or other lens like telephoto 70-300mm, canon lens EF 50mm, extension tubes for macro shots and a few filters like the circular polarizer, warming filter etc.

Feedback

These are the kind of pictures that need an eye for attention, because its not the sort of images you take by planning the subject. Whenever you plan to have a walk around a city take your camera with you and as many different lens or accesories as possible. I have found myself many times regreting for not taking with me a particular lens and seeing something that could have been a really nice shot. When shooting creatures you have to be very fast and observative as they are not easy to control, they are not like humans so you cannot ask them to take a specific pose so its all about capturing the moment. Dont be afraid to get as close as possible, if you see that they are not scared be brave!
