Behind The Lens

Location

I captured this image at one of my favourite streams hidden away in Dorrigo National Park, NSW Australia. This particular area is often left unexplored by visitors who stick to the main walking track.

Time

The conditions were definitely in my favour on this day! My friends and I headed off on the one hour drive from home early in the morning as the sun was rising. I'd spent a lot of time here and had always wanted to capture light rays breaking through the canopy into the gorge, only possible in the early morning.

Lighting

This was shot using only natural light. Although clear sunny days aren't usually ideal for shooting in rainforests, the early morning sun wasn't too harsh and worked quite well with the mist rising from the forest floor.

Equipment

My trusty Canon EOS 6D, Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L and Manfrotto 190XPROB tripod.

Inspiration

It had been a long time since I'd shot portraits and I was itching to try my hand at something new! As I small child I always thought that fairies must live in the forest - this is my representation of that belief I had as a youngster, set in a place of purity and peacefulness.

Editing

The bulk of my editing process here was creating a warm feeling by shifting the green and yellow hues towards orange as well as warming my white balance slightly. I used curve adjustments to selectively lighten and darken key areas (girl's dresses and skin, rock highlights & leaves) using layer masks and applied a light Orton glow to the whole image.

In my camera bag

My bag is currently home to a Canon EOS 6D, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L, Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L, Canon 70-200mm f/4L, Sigma 50mm f/1.4, Canon EF 85mm f/1.8, cable release, Hoya circular polariser & Hoya 9-stop ND filter.

Feedback

Planning ahead for your shoot often pays off. In this case, checking the weather forecast allowed me to choose the most promising day to shoot. I arrived early enough to allow myself plenty of time to find a composition I liked before the sun peaked through the canopy. Also, sometimes you have to get wet to get the best shot! I was chest deep in icy cold water while I shot this but it was well worth 10 minutes of discomfort. Thanks!
