Location
This image was taken in Lisbon, particularly at the Chiado Subway Station. It's a stunning place with beautiful lighting illuminating all the underground corridors and stairs.Time
I'm not totally sure but it must've been a little before sunset. I was with a fellow photographer walking around Lisbon and we figured we could probably get interesting angles at the subway station, so we went there and it paid off. There was almost no movement down there, we were on our own which resulted in a free canvas of different and engaging lines. I think I took this one in the 16th of March, 2012.Lighting
Subway stations are filled with great opportunities since you'll find tunnels connecting the surface with the underground and the are usually carefully illuminated. In this case I just used the lights from the light bulbs illuminating the automatic stairs. I had an easy shot in front of me, the trick was figuring out how to get the most out of the scene.Equipment
I took this with my very first DSLR and the camera with which I learned most of the things I know today. It was a Konica Minolta Dynax 7D that I inherited from my father when he bought a new camera. The lens I used was a Sigma 12-24 mm f4. 5-5.6 DG EX. I shot this image handheld.Inspiration
I love Kubrickian perspectives so once I see a long corridor or a tunnel or long stairways I usually try to think of way to capture them. I had just 'walked' down the stairs and looked back, that's when I saw the scene. Curvy leading lines adorned with white ceramic tiles, two perfectly symmetric automatic stairs and a long tunnel going up to the surface. I had to capture it, so I grabbed the ultra wide, composed and shot away.Editing
Yes, this was shot as a color RAW file and when I shot it I immediately knew I'd convert it to Black and White. The scene was already a little monochromatic in color anyways so I figured I could get a little more drama out of it he I used B&W. I had to photoshop one person out. I usually like human elements in my photos but this person just wasn't well located within the scene. The B&W processing was done with Nik Collection's Silver Efex Pro which I love and use very often. In my camera bag
Right now I'm using the Sony A68 since it used the same mount as my previous Konica Minolta, this means I can keep using the same lenses. As for glass, most of the lenses I use today carried over from my dad's previous time with Minolta SLR's. In my bag I usually have the super wide I shot this photo with (Sigma 12-24 mm, f4. 5-5.6), a Minolta 70-210 mm f4 (commonly known as 'The Beercan'), and Minolta 50 mm f1.7.Feedback
It's all about location. As I said before, subway stations are perfect for this type of shots, so if you can, head on over to the closest subway station or underground facility and you'll probably find something pretty interesting. Now, you have to be careful with the time. You'll probably have lots of people circulating if you go there at rush hour, so have that in mind. Other than that, just keep your eyes open and wait until you see that one scene that stands out to you.
