Location
This photo was taken on a freezing January afternoon in Chicago. I admire the dedication of my models!Time
We arrived around 3pm; I was looking for the best background for the visual story I wanted to tell. The beach was covered with ice mountains, rock solid and rough to work with.Lighting
The dreary day was perfect to create a dark, surrealistic images with a little touch of erotica.Equipment
This was shot using Canon 5D Mark II, lens I believe was 50mm. I did not use a tripod or flash. I prefer a natural light on a crisp, overcast day like this one.Inspiration
I usually have a concept before I start to work; sometimes it comes to me in a dream, sometimes people around me inspire me. In this case I knew I wanted to use a telephone; as metaphor to portrait loneliness and a possibility of a danger in a vulnerable moment.Editing
Yes; I adjusted shadows&highlights, desaturated the image a little, added texture on the sky and a vignette. I played with levels. The image was also cropped. In my camera bag
I typically have my Cannon 5D Mark II, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm and 14mm wide angle lens. I always carry ND (neutral density) grad filters and a portable tripod.Feedback
My advise is to look for the right light. Have a concept for the session or a shot and learn your equipment, before you start working with models. Often times, the light changes very quickly and a good photographer knows how to adjust the settings quickly to capture the right moment. Also, very important when working with models is to know how to direct them. Mutual trust and ability to communicate is a key.
