All the elements used in this collage are my own…
All but the water were shot with a Canon 5D MkI and 16-35mm lens.
THE ELEMENTS:
The image started with a picture of the beautifully melancholic ruins of the ancient abbey at Villers la Ville south of Waterloo, Belgium.
I made an HDR image of 3 exposures (with Photomatix) of the main section. As I used a wide angle lens to include the vaulted ceiling, I also needed to correct the sloping verticals using the Transform tool in CS2
The water on the floor is from a shot I took on film a few years ago at Gibraltar in southern Spain (EOS 100 + 24-80mm on Fuji Reala 100 ISO)…
The sky through the windows in the back of the abbey was taken from this shot from Flagler Beach in Florida (never know when yer gonna need a dynamic sky… always good to keep a couple in your library).
The original picture had 6 round windows in the back… I replaced them with a segment of this window from another section of the abbey, just cuz it looked cooler.
The birds are from this other take of the sky over Flagler Beach. No idea what they are, but as I didn’t have one single shot of vampire bats (which actually surprised me…), I settled for these guys.
The roots growing up the columns in the foreground were actually growing up the outer wall of the abbey… so I planted them inside with CS2 and couldn’t believe how quickly they spread….
And finally… the 7th element. Reeled off 60 shots of myself in lots of poses and a couple of different shirts. Did it on the pattio with the self timer and totally frustrated the next door neighbor as he could see the set up but I kept myself out of view. If it were me, I would have had the kid kick a football over the hedge and told him to have a good look while he fetched it!
Thanks for lookin' !

So much to see in this photo, it brings out the creativity that it took to reach the final outcome. Great job.

Love the sea in your own home :) Do you shoot all of the photos for your work or are some stock?

Thanks so much for the appreciation :-) I do make a point of shooting all the elements myself. In my description here to the right I pretty much explain the entire process. Again, cheers for the interest !

Funny you should ask... the direction this picture took actually evolved on its own as I added each element. I was kinda worried I wouldn`t know when to stop. But I feel I got it right. Sometimes inspiration comes from so far out in left field that you never find it again once it`s spent. So you just move on and hope something else comes along. Thanks for appreciating this, it`s pretty special to me :-)

I`ve always felt it was a good thing to put an explanation in the description Sandra, if for no other reason than to show how much work went into the image :-) Thanks for the thanks !!

wow, love it. Is the look achieved with the HDR or have you given it any other treatment?

Thanks for the love Verity :-) No other processing, except for adjusting levels and contrast in certain areas to up the dynamic a bit. I also used a white layer over the rear area and adjusted the opacity to simulate a bit of mist. The HDR was responsible for the overall vibe. Your appreciation made my day !

Randy, I had no idea… just logged on and got your comment, so thanks for the heads up! It's my first challenge win. I would have won one the other day, but the challenge host's 5 year old son apparently wiped my entry from the challenge after it had been at the top of the voting list for over a week. I was really pissed off. When stuff like that happens you either feel like the universe is against you, or the host was up to something foul. But we're here to play nicely, right? Today the universe is on my side. As are you good man. Thanks agin !!
