Is this a real building?

Yes bigtrocks, it's the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health located in Las Vegas. The architect Frank Gehry has designed a number of similar surreal crumpled like structures all over the world.

Behind The Lens

Location

I am an Australian born, self-taught photographer and classically trained pianist based in Canberra the Capital of Australia. With a background in Event Management and Marketing, I first picked up a camera out of sheer necessity and soon discovered photographs capture expression and tell stories. My work to date has concentrated on a variety of styles ranging from corporate events, still life, landscapes, fine art portraiture, nature and animals. Many of my images are influenced by music and the seemingly ordinary things that surround us in everyday life. The architectural masterpiece pictured in this shot is the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health situated in the city that never sleeps, Las Vegas. The building is the brain child of world famous architectural genius Frank Gehry who is the designer of some of the world's best-known buildings including the titanium-clad Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain.

Time

This was taken at 11.00 am the day after my husband and I were married in a non-traditional ceremony for two under the welcome to Las Vegas sign.

Lighting

I would like to wow readers with the technical aspects of this shot but the truth is it was spontaneous, taken from the open roof top of a tourist bus whist balancing a coffee in one hand and a camera in the other. I usually prefer to shoot at dawn and dusk but this shot was taken in the most un-ideal conditions. It was almost the middle of the day in Nevada during summer and the extreme light cast harsh shadows. In hindsight, the intense light probably worked to my advantage maximizing the shininess of this magnificent metallic structure. Having just taken a number of other photo's I had already lowered my ISO and had just enough time to adjust my exposure time to get a decent shot of this beautiful structure as we zoomed past in a tourist bus.

Equipment

This particular photo was taken with a Canon EOS 450D using a standard 18-55mm kit lens, a lovely combination that helped me grow as an artist and really push the limits with what can be achieved. No other special equipment was used, it's amazing how you can make-shift a tripod from the railing of a moving tourist bus.

Inspiration

There are so many architectural marvels in Las Vegas, it truly is a photographers playground and the most unique city on earth. When I saw this building during our tour of the city I was in awe at it's crumpled surreal like structure and the reflective nature of the materials used to create it. To me it's a piece of art rather than just a building and I new I had to capture a shot.

Editing

My standard work flow consists of minor adjustments to lighting, contrast and temperature. This particular shot had a couple of imperfections due to harsh shadows that were touched up in Photoshop prior to the final edit in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

After months of eating two minute noodles, my on the go lowe pro back pack houses a Canon 5D Mark III and is packed ready to walk out the door with what I consider the two most versatile lenses from my collection the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L II and Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM. I also carry with me a a shutter release cable and a light weight YellowStone professional tripod for those shots that require absolute stability.

Feedback

Get off the bus! better still if you are travelling to a place you've not visited before it pays to research the architecture and potential photography hot spots before you go so that you can shoot in more ideal conditions, taking your time to observe where the light falls and really maximizing the environmental factors to your advantage when deciding on your final set-up . The difference between a great photo and a stunning photo is the photographers ability to capture more than just the subject matter. For this shot I would recommend taking several shots bracketing your exposure manually. Consider also taking an ND filter with you to really slow down your shutter speed during the day and capture those beautiful cloud trails overhead.
