Built in 1829 and closed in 1971 (the year I was born) the Eastern State Penitentiary was saved from the wrecking ball and turned into a museum of sorts. It is in a state of semi ruin and some areas are inaccessible because it is too far gone. They are slowly renovating it mainly through donations and I am sure it is an expensive endeavor. In this photo you can see the frame holding the ceiling up.
