Behind The Lens

Location
This series was shot in a local aerial dance / burlesque studio called The Goddess Movement, owned by an amazing woman named Aryn Savard. The beautifully built dancer in this shot is Wendy Lindquist - Tirk. She is not only a highly accomplished bodybuilder, powerlifter, trainer and dancer, she is one of my best friends.
Time
This studio was completely closed off from outside ambient light, which is how I like it. The lighting is entirely from strobes, in this case I think I just used umbrellas for diffusers. This was a mid afternoon session.
Lighting
These were 400 w/'s strobes, nothing fancy. I always use remote triggers on them, this is simply on manual settings and tightly controlled angles directing the lighting. If you'd like to talk lighting, feel free to drop me a line.
Equipment
This was shot with my Canon 5D2. The full frame capacity is beautiful to work with, and the detail & range makes editing easier. I always shoot on raw, this is an l-series 24-105 lens. For these shoots, I'm usually moving fast to much to use a tripod.
Inspiration
Easy question, just look at this... I love capturing human potential, so I'm in like Flynn for dance, bodybuilding, circus, contortion, aerial dance... If they bend, burn, bounce, or boogie, I'm happy to play along ????
Editing
For this series I just cleaned up the background and used the Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 to get the black and white feel that I like.
In my camera bag
Depending on the session, the basics of camera, triggers, extra batteries, extra memory cards, business cards... That kind of thing. If it's more elaborate, I pack props, masks, oil, water sprayers, mineral makeup, smoke bombs, sometimes rope or chain, again depending on the theme.
Feedback
Get used to shooting at the apex of movement, shoot in an empty space without distractions or gear in the back ground. Appreciate the art, dedication & athleticism of the dance you're shooting. This is a collaborative effort, make sure they are involved and happy with their form. Move fast. They can't hold these positions for long, and having a dance coach helping with positioning and posing is incredibly valuable.
