This photo of Cathy Fox’s original artwork is of two types of paper silhouettes one negative and the other positive. We completed hours of research to see if we could locate an image like this one and had no luck. We have at one time thought this was a woman holding the child to protect it. Then we came to the conclusion that this is a bearded man holding the child hostage. The period of this scene would appear to be in the early 1960’s and maybe located in Eastern Europe. Please share with us your ideas and thoughts as to the story that these découpés depict.
Stanford University indicates that where previous studies of face recognition have been based on frontal views, studies with silhouettes show humans are able to extract accurate information about gender and age from the silhouette alone. This is an important concept for artists who design characters for visual media, because the silhouette is the most immediately recognizable and identifiable shape of the character. In the case of these two paper silhouettes we propose the artist Cathy Fox purposely eliminated any gender clues.
The invention of the camera signaled the end of the silhouette as a widespread form of portraiture.

I agree things don't change, war will always be hell. These cutouts depict another era when one considers we now resort to drone stikes, never to see our victums at least on a personal level.
