This is one of those everyday images. You know the kind. You are distracted from the washing up by the daily appearance of certain birds by your feeder. My grandson named this little guy Buster and it stuck. I keep a camera by the window for such an opportunity. Right on cue, he flies in driven by the cool weather to the place he always gets fed. He perches on the garden gate .He raises his head and looks at me pleading for more seed. His feathers are all fluffed up against the freezing wind so he looks twice his size. Who can resist an extra bit of food for this little fellow? Not me! He waits till I put it down and scoffs the lot. Then when he lifts his eyes again, I take some shots. This is a real favourite of mine .Also my grandson's favourite. He has it on his bedroom wall.Time
It is a winter day in the northern hemisphere. The sky is overcast and grey. It is about 10 am .Lighting
Since the weather was pretty grey I decided to use my off -camera flash for the shot. I also tried various increases in aperture till I got what I wanted. It meant there was the contrast in the body of the little Robin. It showed up his fathers in exactly the way I intended. I knew he was used to flash and had not taken flight when it was used in previous shots. So I took the chance to use it again for this image. I have my camera set up on the tripod by my window close to the gate and bird feeder,which are favourite resting places for winter visitors and regulars alike. I have used the flash on my camera on some days and also no flash in brighter winter light. I had tried both that morning so decided to go for the superior image I got with the off-camera flash.Inspiration
The brave little bird returning every day and who was so trusting he did not take flight when I approached, was my inspiration. I have a little series of Winter Visitors which I have taken and which friends have requested each year. In fact, Buster is top of my Christmas card list ...and is Mr December on my Calendar each year.Editing
The only post processing was very slight adjustment of the light.In my camera bag

Be prepared .If possible and you see a regular visitor to your garden or park, note the time of day and weather conditions, in a little notebook. Having the correct food for the birds you wish to photograph is key to them returning daily. Take shots over a period of time using different angles/aperture/lighting. See what is best in your situation .Then adjust to get the desired effect . Plenty of time taken and use of a variety of practice shots will pay dividends.
