Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my garage in the dark! Flash speed is everything, shutter speed means nothing.

Time

during the day, dark space.

Lighting

Single flash at 1/32 power

Equipment

Canon 7d, Tamron 90mm macro lens, tripod, flash off camera, home made trigger system with adjustment for drop size, time between drops (2 drop colision), shutter open time, flash delay etc. Unit can also do time lapse, lightning, infared trigger and sound.

Inspiration

Many water drop shots i've seen especially by Corrie White inspired me to build the unit, added bonus is the sound trigger which i really enjoy using as well.

Editing

Fairly minimal, exposure, highlight/shadows, minimal crop, noise redution, saturation and sharpness. Always from a raw file.

In my camera bag

Depends on my needs for the day, always carry my Sigma 50-500, a very useful lens on a budget, flash, tamron 90mm, and sigma 24-70 2.8 oh and a 7d body

Feedback

Flash speed is your friend and enemy, you need low power to freeze motion and maybe higher ISO than is comfortable. I started with a jug of water, syphon tube and on camera flash in the kitchen and got the bug, many hours with thousands of shots and maybe one keeper in a 100, built the trigger system and get the drop virtually every time but the its not always a good looking drop! thanks to M. Ross who did all the hard work designing , building and putting his plans for the unit on the internet. http://mrossphoto.com/wordpress32/phspt/
