The towering column in the center reminded me of a dragon. I shot this with a Sony a850 with a Minolta-Sony 18-75 lens.

Behind The Lens

Location
I captured this shot in the Upper Antelope Canyon in Paige, Arizona. Paige is in northern Arizona a few miles south of Utah. Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon. This is in the Navajo Nation and the Navajos control and operate the Canyon. There are Navajo approved Guides who escort you through the Upper and Lower Canyons.
Time
It was 1:30 p.m. when I got set up and shot this scene. I got about tewnty shots off before I had to move for other shooters to get a chance at capturing their best shot.
Lighting
As I said, I shot the scene at 1:30 p.m. The best time to shoot most slot canyons is mid-day, when the light is shining down into the canyon. Earley in the morning or late in the day my be great for most landscape photography, but slot canyons require the Sun to be at higher angles to help deal with the shadows.
Equipment
I shot a Sony a850 with a Minolta/Sony 18-70 F3.5-5.6 lens I set it at about 20 mm, f/16 and 1.3 shutter speed.
Inspiration
As soon as I rounded the corner of the entrance to the Upper Canyon, this room came into view, I knew I had to jump ahead of the group to set up first and grab this scene. It was one of those OMG moments that just makes you move or stops you in your tracks, dumbstruck. I moved, got about twenty shots off, altering my zoom slightly and my shutter speed once.
Editing
This shot was a gift from the Navajo Spirits! I didn't even have to crop the image.
In my camera bag
When I got this shot, I carried the sony a850, Minolta/Sony 18-70 lens, the Sony 4.5-5.6 75-300, and a Slik tripod. Today, I still shoot the Sony a850 with the Minolta/ sony 75-300 lens, a Ziess 16-35 lens and a Ziess 24-70 lens. My bag also holds a Nikon D810 with a Nikon 28-300 mm lens and a Tamron 150-600 mm lens. Giotto bullhead tri-pod.
Feedback
You need a good guide to get the best shots in Antelope Canyon. tours by Roger Ekis or Carolene Ekis are both Navajo owned services that I recommend. Before you go into the canyon, have your camera mounted on your tripod and ready for action. F stops between 11 and 18 are best. I had mine at 16. I shot in manual the first time I went in so I could play with the shutter speed incase we came to a really well lit area. Aperture priority is probably the way to go. Don't plan on changing lens. The risk of sand getting into your camera is too great. Bring an air puffer. Lots of sand drops from the top of the canyon with little wind. You have to set up fast and get your shot before others get in your frame. The Summer is great light but the crowds are less in the winter months.
