Behind The Lens

Location

This long exposure image was captured in the south west of France. The wind had picked up with a storm front coming in from the left. By the time I packed my gear away the heavens opened. It was certainly a sprint back to the car!

Time

Towards the end of the day, the light was deteriorating fast as a storm was making its mark. When looking out at the ocean, the complementary colour palette was very apparent. A long-exposure of around a minute gave me a captivating layered view of varying blues with the sandy beach in the foreground. One of favourite images, which I can gaze at for hours.

Lighting

I am a natural light fine art photographer who waits for the right conditions. There have been times where I have gone back to the same location more than half a dozen times to capture differing times of year, seasons and time of day.

Equipment

A Nikon D800 user, this wonderful piece of machinery suits my style of photography; equipped with a range of Nikon lenses - wide-angle, tilt & shift & telephoto; the Zeiss 21mm fixed lens has pride of place in my camera bag. The clarity of the images is superb. Like most things in life, I do follow a process from the point I decide to take the image to installation.

Inspiration

Each landscape has a personality and capturing this raw energy from a visual standpoint adds a certain amount of permanence to what would otherwise simply be a brief and transient experience. An interpretation of simplicity, texture, shape and colour taken a particular moment in time making the ordinary, visually extraordinary. In this case, I was inspired by the colour. Above all, photography represents an intrinsic marriage between creativity and technical prowess.

Editing

I do very little in post-production. In that respect, I am at the purist end of photography, wanting to capture it right in camera will always be my starting point no matter how long it takes.

In my camera bag

What people would expect, an array of lenses, filters, cable release and a compass. I will always keep a couple of healthy granola bars in my bag. should I get stuck somewhere for a while.

Feedback

Mastering good composition, understanding your camera and its functions are important. I am someone who loves keeping things simple and I am of the view less is more. Asmita Kapadia
