Bravo! How do you even get a shot like this? They fly off before I ever get this close to them!

Behind The Lens

Location

In the Los Angeles, California area ... found this beauty in "The Jungle" area of the Los Angeles River

Time

The image was taken at 8:42am

Lighting

I actually used a Paul C. Buff Zap 1000 studio strobe for the lighting

Equipment

This was taken back in 2005 with a Fuji S3 digital camera with a 200mm Micro-Nikko. I believe I also used an extension tube and Nikon 3T diopter. Tripod was probably the Gitzo Safari with an Arca-Swiss B1 bullhead.

Inspiration

I am a trained Entomologist and am always looking for insects to photograph. I was photographing this "Vivid Dancer" damselfly from the top looking down. After a minute or two, I realized that if I changed my position I could get a more dramatic image mainly highlighting the eyes.

Editing

This was taken back in 2005 so I don't really recall much about the PP. Typically back then, if I did anything in Photoshop, it was a bit of sharpening and cropping.

In my camera bag

Now I shoot mainly a Fuji X-T1 mirrorless system, and have a couple Canon 5DS cameras for macro and telephoto work.

Feedback

Yes. 1) If you are not using a strobe, either be able to use a fast shutter speed with IS or use a tripod, 2) as long as the subject is cooperating (being still), try to shoot it from as many angles as possible. Sometimes your first choice may be the best one, but other times it might not be. In this case, this image is far more dramatic than the first shots I took.
