Behind The Lens

Location

I took the photo in National Park of Isojärvi, Finland. The boulder is in middle of the forest - however - there is small walking path to boulder.

Time

Around 4pm - sunny day.

Lighting

This is taken in the middle of forest - in the middle of the walk - you cannot really control the light too much, except.... when you go to nature walks - make sure it's sunny day to get best possible pictures, hard light, best pictures - cloudy weather, usually not so good pictures. When I go to new forest walks - as this walk was - I rarely know what to really except - it's difficult to know which light or weather condition is the best for certain place - until you actually see it. If you know - that certain place is awesome picture in certain weather (as, after the rain or night time, or sunset/sunraise, or if the sun is from south-west) - then you have to walk into place again in certain day time - certain weather - to get that awesome picture of the place.

Equipment

Just my old camera - that I no longer own - Olympus XZ-1.

Inspiration

This 100-tonne boulder was lifted on three smaller boulder by work of Ice Age. Before, it was belied, that these boulders were lifted by trolls and giants. These kind nature things are very interesting to me, it's quite amazing that this boulder is really standing on those three smaller boulders. It was actually bit scary too to go very close to that boulder, even it's been standing there like 10.000 years - it's still bit scary feeling that it will fall down and roll over you :)

Editing

No, not really. Picture was fine as it was.

In my camera bag

I take pictures of nature, landscapes mostly.... but sometimes little wildlife - I try carry less camera equipments as possible in my walks in the nature. So - Nowdays, I carry Nikon D7100 & Sigma 18-35 1.8 - I usually have additional lens when walking around - it can be either Sigma 50-150 2.8 or samyang 14mm f/2.8 - I try include longer telephoto in my bag someday.

Feedback

There is no really secrets to capture landscapes or nature. One good place to find something interesting - is just google maps pictures about the area you go, and just read about interesting places in the area. National Parks have usually maps that tells interesting sightsees as this boulder is - this boulder was marked in the map of the National Park of Isojärvi... so, it was quite easy to find... but in reality, you never really know the sightsee in the nature interesting or not - before you actually see it. Just make sure - most of good daylight nature pictures are taken in good light - sunny day.
