Behind The Lens

Location

Ocean City, Maryland

Time

If memory serves me correctly, it was pretty close to high noon.

Lighting

High noon generally is not the best time of day to shoot anything. But when playing tourist, you seize whatever opportunity you get. I knew that this was going to be a monochromatic image from the start. The light clouds helped diffuse the mid-day light, but the overall light was still flat. I did want to shoot a long exposure, so I needed a strong ND filter, and knowing the dynamic range, a gradient filter was also key. To tame the light, I used the Big Stopper for the LE, but did something unconventional with the grad filter. I was under the pier and wanted to capture the texture and details, so I inverted the 0.6 grad. The results speak for itself.

Equipment

A Canon 5DMKII combined with a Canon EF 17-40 f/4L on a Manfrotto tripod with a Yongnou wireless trigger. Filters and filter holder were Lee Foundation with a Big Stopper and a Lee 0.6 soft Grad ND filter (inverted). I would also like to add input and encouragement from my daughter to see this shot!

Inspiration

There were some wispy clouds in the sky and the light was pretty flat. My daughter and I were camping nearby on Assateague Island, and we went to OC for a quick bite and some souvenir shopping. We were playing tourists, and as a tourist, my equipment was on my shoulder. As we were strolling under the OC fishing pier, my daughter poked me. I stopped for a minute and ran this comp through my head. What to do and how to do it? A long exposure was the best option, but how? How would I get the details of the wooden pier while balancing the harsh mid-day light?

Editing

Raw to Jpg via LR and PS. B&W courtesy of Nik Silver Evex. Some dodging and burning and noise removal courtesy of Nik Dfine.

In my camera bag

Normally the following; Canon 5DMKII, Canon 7D and occasionally a Life Pixel modified T1i. Canon 17-40 f/4L or 24-70 f2.8L, 70-200 f/2.8L ISII, Canon 50mm f/1.4 Lee Filter system, Lee GND filters, SinghRay RGND Yongnou wireless triggers Wrigleys Cobalt gum. Sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on what I want to shoot.

Feedback

Break the rules. In this case, shooting at mid-day. Oh, and inverting the grad filter.....It's about getting the shot. Carpe Diem. Think outside the box, and sometimes, the rewards will speak for itself.
