Behind The Lens

Location
I took this photo at Chapel Hill in Shandon, California.
Time
Between 2 and 3 in the afternoon.
Lighting
Because of scheduling, we had a small window on when to shoot. The sun was high and the lighting a little harsher than I would have liked, but we were able to bounce light to help fill out better than without it. The clouds softened the light enough that we didn’t need anything to diffuse the natural light.
Equipment
Believe it or not, I took this with an iPad 3 and shot it handheld. I intended on doing a lot of post editing and knew that there would be enough light at that time of day. Although an iPad is somewhat limited, I weighed out the use of it as a tool and where it would be in the workflow, knowing the amount of editing and what the intended look was going to be before I began.
Inspiration
I have wanted to shoot some western/cowboy themed photographs and this location came up. I did some research and thought it would be perfect. I plan on coming back to take some sunrise photos there.
Editing
I’m a visual effects artist and always planned on doing something special with this series. I did some editing in Adobe After Effects, as well as with Adobe Photoshop using a combination of High Dynamic Range and special visual effects techniques used in motion pictures, incorporating multiple layers, masks, and transfer modes. I took advantage of the texture in the clouds, which helped separate Amy from the background.
In my camera bag
I carry with me a Nikon D-80 camera body. The lens I use the most is a Nikkor 24mm – 85mm lens. I also take with me my iPad 3. I also use an older Manfrotto tripod. I believe as long as we know our tools, and the fundamentals of light and photography, we can capture dynamic imagery.
Feedback
I always suggest knowing your equipment. You don’t need the latest and greatest to take good photos. Learn the differences in light densities, color temperatures, and lens speeds. Camera bodies will always change, but good lenses one will hold onto for many years. Always make sure you have enough light for your desired affect. Also consider what the post process will involve when you are planning the shoot. And plan beforehand to help ensure you get the shots you want, have access to the location, and have all of the gear you will need with you.
