That ice is amazing, and the warm tones from the sunset give it a really appealling tone. Nice job.

Location
This photo was taken at Saint Joseph, Michigan.Time
This was taken just after sunset.Lighting
In my experence, the best lighting is late afternoon side lighting. In the fall and winter here, along the shore of Lake Michigan? the sun the sun sets off to the side rather than right across lake. Some of my favorite shots were taken in late fall.Equipment
I shot this using a Sony A99 and a Minolta 28-135 lens. I used a tripod and bracketed to ensure I was able to get a good tonal range.Inspiration
I have lived near Lake Michigan my whole life, but had never shot the lighthouse in winter. It was on my list, and when I saw a good sunny day after a very long, very cold couple of weeks I knew it would be a good day to shoot.Editing
I try to do as little post processing as possible. I make a lot of very small adjustments until the color and tone feels right. In my camera bag
I usually have some ND filters, and a remote trigger is essential. The older Minolta lenses I use, and my tripod too, are quite heavy so I try to pack light.Feedback
My advice is to practice first before going to location. The days after this was taken were forecasted to be in the mid to upper 30's so it was important to get the shot on the day I was there. I was prepared with the right equipment and the right settings. Safety is an issue also - for this ice cleats were essential.
