Location
Taken from the South Pier at Silver Beach in St. Joseph, Michigan, USA on the shores of Lake MichiganTime
This photo was taken about 4:15pm. After spending an hour on figuring out how to get around a wall of ice on the pier without falling off the pier, i managed to make my way out to the end of the South Pier, which was just as ice encrusted as the North Pier seen in the photo.Lighting
I used the winter storm and dark clouds to my advantage by shooting in B&W that would give a great contrast to the white ice.Equipment
Sony A77, Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG HSM, and a good pair of Atlas Snowshoes.Inspiration
Being from Michigan and growing up on the Great Lakes, Lighthouses are part of our culture. Many people do not give the Great Lakes credit for being harsh environments because they are Lakes. I am currently working on getting photos of our beloved lighthouses in the harshest of conditions. The St Jospeh Light is famous for being blasted in ice.Editing
Macphun Tonality Pro is the program i use for my B&W images. This photo had some HDR work done to increase the detail of the ice, giving it more definition. In my camera bag
MeFOTO Roadtrip Travel Tripod, my Sigma Lens, spare batteries, and a couple handheld aerial flares just in case, a survival blanket again just in case.Feedback
When out photographing in the winter, dress warm and in layers, more importantly a good pair of snowshoes.
