Behind The Lens

We drove the car to a field close by the models house. Just out side of town. In the heart of South Africa, in the beautiful little city called Bloemfontein. (translated to 'City of Roses')
It was in the afternoon, around 2pm. very early spring, when the days were still a little shorter.
It was very bright, but cloudy, which made for the most amazing light. The lighting was perfect for this type of shoot, as it made the shadows soft, and the model didnt have to squint her eyes, which is usually a problem in direct sunlight.
Canon 550D, with a 55mm fixed canon lens. no tripod, no flash. Did use a silver reflector though, balanced between the car seats and the roof of the car
The model, who is a good friend of mine, sent me a photo of the car, and the inspiration struck. We had to wait for the sun to get to the right angle in this shot, but it was worth it. I wanted to capture that serine feeling you get while on a road trip, away from civilization and comfort.
I cleaned up her skin a bit in post processing, and adjusted the colours slightly using PS CS6, to give it a warmer, older feel. But mostly the photo is SOOC.
In my camera bag
These days I use my Canon 650D, and try to always use my 50mm fixed lens. Trusty reflector of course. I like using natural light, so I rarely use a flash.
Wait for the perfect day. Watch the weather channel and look out for days that could be cloudy mostly, with as little as possible rain. Even if it is nice and cloudy, try to shoot early morning, or late afternoon, to get the right angle of the sun light bouncing through the clouds. I would also recommend using a fixed lens, rather than a zoom lens. the quality and sharpness is almost always a lot better. The 50mm also gets much brighter colours than the zoom lens, which is amazing. A reflector is always handy. It was a bit dark inside the car, because of the shadow cast, so the reflector brightened the whole scene up.
