Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon. You're looking at the last bit of the trail that ends at the overlook for bridal veil falls.

Time

This was shot between 5 and 6pm in late October. So the light wasn't too harsh, and probably a little dim under the canopy.

Lighting

It was mostly flat lighting beneath the canopy, with the sky being the brightest part of the scene. Thats why I chose to find a composition without much sky, since I'd be losing the details there in this single exposure image.

Equipment

This was shot on my old Nikon D60 with an 18-55mm lens. Looking at the metadata, I can see I didn't quite know what I was doing at the time (nearly 10 years ago) because I set up on a tripod and got a 25 second exposure at f/22 with ISO 100. I definitely wouldn't use those settings today.

Inspiration

I was inspired to photograph this area because I grew up in the bay area and I was absolutely enamored with the woods and waterfalls.

Editing

I used Lightroom and Photoshop to do some basic edits to the image.

In my camera bag

I always have a 35mm and an 11-16mm in my bag, along with filters, batteries, and lens wipes. I also keep a small first aid kit and a headlamp with me.

Feedback

Just get out there and start shooting. Composition is key. Move around and try different angles until you find one that you like.
