Behind The Lens

Location
I took this photo in my new loft that doubled as a studio when I moved to Big Rapids, Michigan. The place was on top of an auto shop right in the middle of town. It was huge and had character, it looked like it used to be a series of offices that were now converted into a unique living space complete with vaulted ceilings, interior french doors and huge windows.
Time
This was a late morning photo shoot. It was towards the end of the shoot.
Lighting
The lighting made this photo unique and it was complete luck! We were just wrapping up the shoot and noticed the intense shadows my horizontal window blinds were creating on the wall. The model and I looked at each and she jumped on a piece of furniture so she could be right in the middle of the shadows and I grabbed my camera. Her pose and look at the camera added a really edgy feel to the photo. Her talent and the good fortune of awesome nature light made this photo possible.
Equipment
I used my Canon EOS 60D. I used a tripod and shutter release but no lighting set. The light was caused by my interior blinds.
Inspiration
This was a spur of the moment photo at the end of a really fun shoot. The shadows on the wall were inspiring and both the model and I had an 'aha moment' and made it happen.
Editing
I kept this very simple. I made it black and white and softened it up a little in Lightroom. This picture was so coincidental that I didn't want to process it too much, I wanted to preserve the spontaneous feel of it.
In my camera bag
I've recently upgraded my equipment. Now I typically carry a Canon 6D and 24-105mm L Series. I have a small collapsable tripod and can fit everything into a very small pack. Occasionally I'll carry a flash, reflector and another tripod to hold my reflector. It allows me to have a mobile, lightweight studio set up on the go.
Feedback
I'm not sure how to recreate the lighting outside of waiting for the sun to hit your blinds. I've found natural light in interesting places can be exceptionally inspiring and create some really unique images. Since it's not in a controlled environment, like a studio, it also teaches you to be mindful of your surroundings and appreciate the natural light and backdrops around us. Working with an exceptional model is really awesome as well. This was my first shoot with Meredith and she had an uncanny ability to change the whole mood and dynamic of a photo with a look or subtle change in her pose. So i'd say meet new models, make up artists and photographers and creatively collaborate whenever you can!
