Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a tour to South America from Santiago to the bottom tip of the continent. We had a few days camping in Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. The subject are the famous horns and the other interest are the lenticular clouds which form over high mountains.

Time

The photo was taken shortly before sunset from our campsite at the River end of the park.

Lighting

The lighting was purely natural sunset light.

Equipment

Taken using a Nikon D90 with a Nikon 18-200mm lens at 50mm. I used a tripod. It is a hdr blend of 3 exposures at f13 ISO200. One normal and one +2 and one -2 stops. All images shot in jpg not RAW.

Inspiration

The lenticular clouds with the sunlight striking the tops of the horns. I saw the clouds coming and took a series of images over about 20 minutes and this was the best of the images.

Editing

Because the dynamic range of the camera and as I was also shooting only in jpg I bracketed the images by +-2stops and combined them in hdr to cope with the dynamic range. Apart from cropping the left side about the only other adjustment was to brightness and contrast.

In my camera bag

These days I shoot with an Olympus OMD-EM1Mk2 and a Mk3. I only ever shoot in jpg as I have found RAW offers virtually no benefit. I have a wide variety of lenses covering everything from a fisheye to the 100-400mm. For landscape photography I use either the Laowa 7.5mm f2 or the Olympus 8-25mm. The Laowa is superb for astro. The other most used lens is the 12-100mm f4 which is a fantastic general purpose lens. I also use either the Olympus 40-150mm PRO or the Panasonic 35-100mm when weight is an issue and I need a faster lens. I usually also carry the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 for low light work as it is sharp wide open and very light. Weight is always an issue and that's where the M4/3 system way outperforms any full frame camera. The EM1Mk3 has a handheld mode which gives 50Mpx images for stationary subjects and 80Mpx on a tripod so resolution is never much of an issue.

Feedback

Landscape photography is tricky as it depends on the light. If you can wait around for great early morning or sunset light that's wonderful but you only get a short window of opportunity. Most of the day the light isn't going to help you so concentrate of details. Foggy/rainy days are great as you have plenty of time and can get some wonderful soft light images. Patience is a virtue and if need be bracket exposures.
