I took this photo at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge TN the day after Christmas. My family lives near there but none of us had ever visited. We were all together and decided to go check it out.Time
Got this shot right after Dollywood opened around 11:30 in the morning the day after Christmas 2014. If I remember correctly the mill is just up the hill from the main entrance. It was a cold day and this was one of the few spots where there was some sun not blocked by the trees.Lighting
I wish I could take credit for the lighting and how patient I was to wait for the right time but in all truth I just thought the view across the water would make a good picture. Sometimes it pays to be lucky rather than good.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Nikon D3100 with my favorite lens a Nikon 16-86mm f 3.5-5.6.Inspiration
Everywhere we go I try to bring my camera because you never know what you will see or capture. As we were walking around my wife pointed out the mill with her usual “honey, take a picture of that.” I snapped a quick picture zoomed in on the mill real tight but didn’t like it. I then zoomed out and snapped a color picture and that’s when I saw the reflection in the water. I honestly do not like black and white photography but my sister, who is great at black and white photos, suggested I change it over. I made a copy in the camera and the rest is history.Editing
I must admit there was some post processing as I used the camera to convert this picture to black and white. This photo is real first for me as I don't really believe in post processing and I don't really shoot in black and white yet this has both.In my camera bag
My only digital camera is my Nikon D3100 and this was taken with my favorite and go to lens a Nikon 16-86mm f 3.5-5.6. My lovely wife got me a Nikon 18-300mm f 3.5-5.6 for my birthday last year and I am really enjoying using it especially for wildlife shots. The only other lens I have is the one the camera came with a Nikon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 lens which comes in handy for indoor shooting. I recently added a mefoto A3050 tripod and really enjoy its light weight but sturdy stance. Finally I recently read an article about different filters so I picked up a couple and have begun seeing what they an do.Feedback
All I can say is keep shooting and experimenting. I was out of my comfort zone having never captured a reflection shot and way out of my league in seeing this was better as a black and white photo. Second don't be afraid to listen to others because another point of view could make the difference between a OK picture and a great shot. If it wasn't for my wife saying take a picture and my sister telling me to make this black and white I don't think I would of ever submitted this to view bug. Finally keep taking pictures its a digital world and if the picture doesn't come out just delete it and take another one.
