Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on the Norfolk coastline in the UK.

Time

The image was taken around 6am as the sun was rising. I'd walked to a few different spots and tried side angles but i really loved how this structure looked straight on, so i set my tripod up and took a few long exposures until i got the movement in the clouds and water that i was happy with.

Lighting

I love the light first thing in the morning and you never know what colours will come your way, sometimes its a bit of an anti climax and other times its just wow!

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5Dmk3 using a 17-70L lens. as i was going for a long exposure the camera was mounted onto a sturdy tripod as a flimsy one just wont be stable due to the wind and Sea that catches you off guard periodically. I used a 6 stop filter to enable me to get the longer shutter speed and this image was 23 seconds.

Inspiration

I just love seascapes and have a good friend who lives on the Norfolk coast and he takes the most amazing seascapes and whenever i visit him we go out and get as many sunrises and sunsets as we can, which most times due to the weather isnt many.

Editing

Post processing was done in Photoshop and i normally do a double RAW exposure, one for the sea and one for the sky and then blend them together using masks. I had to open up the shadows quite a bit of the structure and again this was masked so that it didnt affect the sky layer. I then did a colour balance adjustment layer to get the overall colour that i was happy with. I always finish off with a little noise reduction and then a High Pass filter for some sharpening.

In my camera bag

I actually dont shoot a huge amount of seascapes as its normally wildlife and aircraft, along with some boudoir. If im out shooting wildlife i generally go out with my Canon 5Dmk3 and a 300mm f2.8 lens with a x2 extender all set and ready to go. If a take a bag it would be for model shoots so would be the 5D again and a few lenses but normally the 70-200 2.8, 24-70 2.8, 50 1.4 and the 85 1.8. along witha few lens wipes which are better than using your t-shirt!

Feedback

To get something similar to this you really need to find something of interest in addition to the sunrise/sunset that will wow people and then its a case of going at the right time and having the right set up. I generally take plenty of shots as with long exposures you will always get different results with the cloud and sea.I set my camera up at f11, iso 100 and then just take shots using the shutter release, i use trial and error with exposure but it doesnt take long to work it out once you've taken a few.
