Behind The Lens

Location

I captured this photograph in my back yard, I live in a small summer village on Baptiste Lake which is located in Northern Alberta, Canada approximately 150km North of Edmonton, the capital city of Alberta.

Time

This is an everyday occurrence here...almost a ritual, you see everyday morning and afternoon approximately 15 - 20 deer show up in my back yard to be fed. I captured this image December 13, 2013 at 2:59:09 PM.

Lighting

It was a clear but cold day. The sun had been shining most of the day which afforded me enough light to get a properly exposed image.

Equipment

This was taken with a Nikon D3s equipt with a Nikor 70 - 200mm lens and a Nikor 1.4x teleconverter. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

My wife and I have been feeding the local deer population during the winter months for about 6 years now. This particular young Whitetail buck (affectionately named Bandit because it appears as though he is wearing a mask) showed up in the morning as usual (first one in to feed) with both antlers intact thinking nothing of it the deer fed and left. That afternoon they returned for their afternoon feeding, so I diligently went out to put out their oats and I returned to the house. As I stood at the patio doors watching them feed Bandit looked odd, I have to admit it took a few seconds to register that he had dropped an antler, I got my camera and went out on my back deck and started to shoot some images of bandit, luckily this image is one of the first I had taken of him looking towards me. Most of the other shots have his head down feeding.

Editing

The images were down loaded in Lightroom where I adjusted the exposure, highlights and cropped image.

In my camera bag

Well good question, firstly I always carry 2 body's a Nikon D3s ans a Nikon D300 as well as an assortment of lens. My must be in the bag lens is my Nikor 50mm f/1.4, then the Nikor 70-200mm f/2.8 along with a 24-70mmf/2.8 Nikor lens. An assortment of filters and a couple flashes.

Feedback

In northern Alberta wildlife is abundant, Deer both Whitetail as well as Mule Deer, Moose, the ever elusive Elk, a variety of birds and small fury creatures. whether you are photographing in the field or your back yard studio one thing is common...be patient and wait for the photograph you want.
