This photo was taken from a window in the office I used to work as Art Director. Is located in the 9th floor in the downtown of Santa Maria, a regional capital city in Rio Grande do Sul, the Brazil´s southernmost state.Time
It was about 1 hour before the sunset, in a day that started very sunny with a clear sky, and became one of the most stormy nights in the 2012 summer.Lighting
With all the contrast between the shadow in the clouds and the brightness of the sky behind it, my main concern regards the lighting, was achieving the right exposure to keep as much information to be able to recover all the details in the post.Equipment
I used a Canon XTi with the original 18-55 kit lens, handheld, manual exposure, manual focus.Inspiration
Since is a very nice place to spot the sunset and the region have intense meteorological activity, I have the habit to photograph the sky very often. I feel like a "sense of duty" to register this moments e share with people because every day give a very unique spectacle of nature and most people simply miss the show because they are indoors or in the street level or too busy to notice. When I develop my RAW files from landscape photos, I try to reproduce the impression I had in the moment, to recreate the image my eyes perceived. This image in particular was kind of hard to achieve that goal because the digital camera don´t have all the dynamic range that the human vision can register. In the final developing, I had the image brightened a little so the details in the buildings could be better displayed. The main post, was the panorama stitching I did to make 58 pics became a large high res image.In my camera bag

Storm chasing is about patience, preparedness and keeping your mind sharp. Know your gear, your limitations and do what you do best. This way you will never miss the moment. Only time and practice will build you photographic eye. Search for places near you that have a privileged point of view, a tall building, a observatory point, a mountain road. Do some research and observe where the storm clouds used to came from. Find a website with real time meteorological info about your region. But most important: keep your camera with you and don´t waste any second.
