Behind The Lens

Location
The photo was taken in Ellensburg, WA.
Time
Late afternoon
Lighting
The lighting was what I like to call 'moody'. It was ridiculously foggy in one spot but you'd turn around and the sun would be shining through a little hole in the clouds.
Equipment
Nikon D5100, Nikon 55-300mm lens
Inspiration
I can't say enough how much I love these elk. The two in the photo are part of a 'bachelor' herd of 4. They are magnificent creatures and I have spent a large chunk of time just hanging out with them. When it's not mating season, it's glorious to see how well these males interact with each other.
Editing
In post processing, I brought up the clarity and sharpness a bit to help define things from within the fog. There wasn't much else that needed done, the environment helped contribute a bunch.
In my camera bag
Nikon D5100, Nikon 18-55mm, Nikon 55-300mm, Tokina 11-16mm, Manfrotto tripod, remote, lens cleaner, rattlesnake kit, flashlights, binoculars, hand warmers, note pad and a pencil. My day consists of jumping in and out of the vehicle to shoot wildlife and landscapes so my gear might look a little different than others.
Feedback
I think it's always important for those attempting to shoot wildlife to know that you should stay back. They look so calm, friendly and wonderful but trust me, they are not. Calm voices and slow movements are always best. If it can be helped, never use flash when shooting wildlife, it can really spook them. So bring a tripod if you need to.
