Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Boston MA at a popular location called Fan Pier.

Time

I went to the location a short while before sunrise and stayed in the area until I'm after dark. This particular shot was taken during the blue hour just after sunse.

Lighting

For landscapes the main thing would be too shoot at the right times. Trying to shoot landscapes middle of the day rarely works, at least for me and tend to get alot of washed out colors. Maybe scout an area in the day and come back before sunrise or sunset and get your shots.

Equipment

Photo taken with a Niko D90 using a Niko AF-S 10-24mm lens (my favorite!) The photo was taken using braketing with a shutter release cable to try and avoid any movement of the camera on my tripod.

Inspiration

Strangely, my inspiration for this shot came after I got alot of motivation on a trip I took to Yellowstone National Park. The trip really got me into shooting again, and this was a spot that I had seen from friends who have shot there. So, a bit of inspiration from friends as well.

Editing

HDR was creates off of 3 exposures using Photomatix. The image I created had some additional minor editing in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I generally take all of my equipment with me. I have a Sigma 50-500 I use for wildlife and even landscapes. Along with that I bring a 35mm nikon lens as well as a macro and wide angle shot. Always want to be prepared, just in Case! Acessary wide I generally take my shutter release cable, Manfrotto tripod and my Joby Zoom tripod to get the really low to the ground shots. For filters, I keep a 10 stop ND filter on hand for those long exposure shots.

Feedback

My main advise would be to just get out and shoot! Take multiple angles, multiple compositions and choose what you like best out of what you get! I also have a habit of bracketing all my shots in case I want to process HDR. I don't always choose to do that, but at least then I have althe option. Last, always use a tripod!! It's not always convenient, but if you want sharp photos its aust!
