This photo was taken in the summer of 2014. My son saw a nest in a tree in our yard and told me he thought he saw some babies. I climbed on a very small ladder and just shot my camera. This is what I captured. He loves this picture.

Behind The Lens

Location

I actually took this photo in my own yard. We get quite a few nests each year and I happened to peak in one of the regular spots. Up popped the baby, so like any photographer, I grabbed my camera as quickly as I could. It was a chance shot! I am a little petite and couldn't see the shot I was taking. I reached over and popped my camera inside and as soon as I did, the baby popped up again. It was amazing!

Time

It was first thing in the morning and it was a pretty humid day!

Lighting

The lighting was perfect actually! The sun was out, but the placement inside the tree was enough shade to shoot with the basic camera settings.

Equipment

I used a canon with a standard 18-55mm lens. It was actually a beginner canon too, the eos T5i. I feel like it isn't always about the camera, but the photographer behind it that shoots a great picture. I've since upgraded to the Mark iii, but definitely hold onto the T5i.

Inspiration

I absolutely love shooting nature, definitely one of my top 3 favorite subjects. It is amazing to me how animals create their habitats. I also happen to have a huge passion for animals and nature in general. I have created a yard that welcomes all different species. Hummingbirds, butterflies and birds. I could spend hours watching them. I also have a huge passion for wild animals, I would love to shoot in Africa or the rain forest.

Editing

I shoot in raw, but I kept the photo in as much of its natural state as possible. I cleaned up the noise and a bit of the shade, color correction and highlights.

In my camera bag

I never leave home without the necessities! My canon body, 2 lenses, external flash, batteries, SD/CF cards and a cleaning cloth. I hate to see spots or marks in the lens.

Feedback

Patience! These types of photos take a lot of patience and often times, luck. ALWAYS, have your camera, mine is an extension of my body. It is always attached to me wherever I go. Often, people will look completely shocked if they see me without it. I always feel like I will miss an awesome shot the day I happen to leave it at home or in the house. Think outside the box, don't go for the "typical" shot. Look for the unusual, the shot that YOU wouldn't normally think of. Be creative, adjust your settings to get the clearest shot possible! Look in areas that you wouldn't normally look or spots that you have observed nature's living creatures in. Go to a pond and shoot ducks or geese, whatever you are passionate about or have wanted to capture before.
