Behind The Lens

Location
I took this photo in my home town, Bloemfontein, in the heart of South Africa. In my backyard.
Time
I think it had to be in the afternoon, around 16:30. Before the golden hour, but still late enough for the shade to cast soft light on my model.
Lighting
Used completely natural light. I did the shoot in open shade of a tree, and made sure the light fell on all the right places (cheeckbones, etc)
Equipment
I used my entry level Canon 550D, and my entry level zoom lens ( 18-55mm)
Inspiration
The shoot was for a boutique in my home town, for their fall collection. We tried to incorporate as many rich 'autumn' colors as possible. The leaves made a perfect backdrop for the portrait, and worked so well with her hair and skin colors.
Editing
I did a bit of post processing. I cleaned up her skin a bit, and payed around with the colors in the photos to give it a warmer color. I was still quite new to photoshop and post-processing, so I didnt know a lot back then.
In my camera bag
I love my nifty fifty! Its always in my bag. It delivers sharp and bright photos compared to zoom lenses. I also love my off-camera GODOX V860c flash with my white umbrella.
Feedback
With portraits, especially close-ups, you dont need a fancy location or studio. Work with what you have, and find interesting and new angles to make it extraordinary. Be prepared, always have your reflector or off camera flash ready, incase you need to counter balance any harsh or direct sunlight. Work with the models features, eg. hair, to make the photo pop a bit more. Make sure the colors in your frame compliments each other. DO a lot of research before your shoot. Know who you are shooting, and where. The clothing and accessories plays just as big a role as the rest. In the end everything, from the model, to the clothes, to the location has to compliment each other.
