Behind The Lens

Location

The campus of University of North Texas. I was out scouting for new photo locations since I was new to the Dallas area and my nieces were in town visiting from North Carolina. When we walked up to the bridge I was so happy because I could already see the image in black and white in my mind's eye.

Time

Of all my black and white photos this is my most striking and it's because the sun was directly overhead. It was July, in Texas, so it had to be hot out but I honestly don't remember that. I just remember how much fun I had with my family and my camera.

Lighting

It was important to me to get the right angle and focus in this shot because with the lighting directly above all the beams and bars, the shadows become part of the architecture of the walkway.

Equipment

I took this with my Nikon D5100, no tripod and no flash necessary.

Inspiration

I favor black and white photography, always have. The contrast draws me in and I find that format mesmerizing. When I approached this area I knew immediately how amazing it would look as a b/w shot. I appreciated being in the right place at the right time of day.

Editing

I don't like a lot of heavy editing or Photoshopping so when I looked at these photos during editing I was thrilled. I hardly adjusted any aspect of this image. It was sharp, slightly crooked but the contrast was exactly what I wanted.

In my camera bag

I am guilty of loving close ups a little too much so I always have a zoom lens handy. Rarely do I not use it either. My Nikon is my go-to camera along with an extra battery and the battery charger. I forgot my charger on an out-of-town trip once, which taught me a frustrating lesson. Also, gotta have the extra memory card.

Feedback

I find many of my photos in the simplest of places, close to home too. Don't overlook the best opportunity to get great shots just a short drive away. If you find a shot you want to take but it's not the right lighting because of weather or time of day, make a note of it and go back. It will be worth it.
