Behind The Lens

Location

Yes, this is one of my favorite photo's. One morning I decided to take a photo shoot drive. I live in rural Oklahoma and there is a lot of farm land in the area. Ready for that perfect shot, I started driving towards the lake. Up and down dirt roads, farmland and fences to both sides. Slowing down hoping something would jump out at me. I hit pay dirt on that next sharp winding curve. There to my amazement on my left were these two of a kind old oak trees. The fog had not lifted yet and the light was right. Here is a poem I found appropriate: Mighty Oak © Kathy J Parenteau ? Published on September 2010 Stand tall oh mighty oak, for all the world to see, your strength and undying beauty forever amazes me. Though storm clouds hover above you, your branches span the sky,in search of the radiant sunlight you count on to survive. When the winds are high and restless and you lose a limb or two, it only makes you stronger, we could learn so much from you. Though generations have come and gone and brought about such change, quietly you've watched them all yet still remained the same. I only pray God give to me the strength he's given you, to face each day with hope, whether skies are black or blue, Life on earth is truly a gift every moment we must treasure, it's the simple things we take for granted that become our ultimate pleasures.

Time

It was around 9:30 am and the fog had not lifted yet. This was a perfect backdrop for my photo shoot.

Lighting

I like to use natural light if at all possible. Here with these two mighty oak trees, the light was soft but yet playing on dark too. The fog gave it a bit of mystique also. So the three elements of light, dark and fog worked out great.

Equipment

At the time I was using a Canon EOS 10D. The ISO: 100, Aperture: F/4.0, Shutter Speed 1/750, Tamron 70/300mm Macro/Zoom lens...one of my favorite.

Inspiration

These two oak trees were the only living things in the entire farmers field! When I turned that curve and looked to my left it was amazing. It was as if they were saying, "Here we are, two of a kind. We are mighty, tall, and a testimony of time. Please take a photo and save this moment."

Editing

I just processed it from color to B & W.

In my camera bag

My Canon 40D, Tamron 70-300mm macro/zoom lens, Canon 50 mm lens and a Vivitar 85m portrait lens. I have a Canon speedlite 430EX 11 but as I mentioned earlier I light to try and use all the natural light I can.

Feedback

I think for me taking photographs is a way to connect to God's world. The beauty surrounds us everywhere we turn. I believe photographers of the world see everything through their view finders a little differently, than someone who doesn't have that passion. My words to others...is just go out there, look around, find beauty in a feather on the ground, a leaf, a group of acorns on a tree, a piece of broken colored glass. Be creative and have fun! Just take photos of what touches your heart and you will find true beauty in all of your results. Sherry Cloud Wilson, Oklahoma
