Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the backyard of my home. I used extension tubes for this macro because there's nothing like being a photographer on a budget!

Time

This image was captured in the afternoon on an overcast, end of summer day.

Lighting

I used natural lighting for this shot. I clipped a color gel to a pole and let the light filter through for the background colors.

Equipment

I took this with my then Nikon D3200 with the 18-55mm kit lens attached to an extension tube; color gel, clips, and a pole for the background color.

Inspiration

I had just gotten the extension tubes from amazon.com and I wanted to test them out, so I was going around my home looking for a great macro shot. I happened upon this little guy resting and set out to test the capabilities of my newly purchased toy.

Editing

I did some post-processing with Lightroom 5. I boosted some of the colors, did some tone correction and sharpened the image to really bring out the details.

In my camera bag

I have a Nikon D7000 in my bag currently and I never leave without my 28mm manual lens, 16mm manual aspherical lens, and 70-300mm telescope lens. I also have a remote shutter with digital readout display, cleaning brushes, cleaning clothes, and other various tools.

Feedback

Capturing macros is all about having enough light, enough patience, and a steady hand. Using complementary colors (blue/orange, yellow/purple, red/green) in an image is always eye catching!
