Everything that lives needs to acknowledge other forms of life –to feed on them, to drive them away, to mate with them, to trust and collaborate with them. Living creatures do not need to be conscious to distinguish one kind of life from another. Bacteria, fungi, worms can do it. Even plants can tell like from unlike, so that a flower will trust compatible pollen and reject what is not. But since nobody knows exactly what differentiates live matter from dead matter, it “seems” that life is the only physical system that has the ability to perceive invisible things (indeed, what is essential is invisible to the eye, as the fox said to the little prince).
