Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at The Desert Botanical Gardens in Phoenix, Arizona. This was an Art Exhibit of hand made masks. They were made out of seeds !

Time

This photo was taken in the afternoon about 1:00 PM. I remember walking into the room and I was amazed at the masks. There were about 20 each hand done with tiny seeds. I could not pass up the lighting , it was wonderful to work with .

Lighting

I wanted the image to appear as if it was popping out of the dark. They had each mask in a cubical of darkness with overhead lights. I think it worked out well !

Equipment

I used my Canon 50D with my 60mm Macro lens . No tripod but I used my on board camera flash.

Inspiration

I just thought these masks were amazing art work. I love to do Black and White shots ! I always feel like Black and White capture moments of feeling so much more than color.

Editing

Yes I did do some work on this shot . Cropping and I brought out more of the blackness and then just increased the lights on the mask itself . I photographed this image in B&W ,not a conversion.

In my camera bag

I always carry extra batteries , my charger, my 28-300mm trusty all around great lens , also my 60mm Macro. I carry lens cleaner and soft cloths and of course my Canon 50D. I also have an 18-55 mm lens in the bag. I protect each of my lens with a UV filter and each one has a circular polarizing lens on it . I live in Arizona where the sun is very bright ! I also have a hood for each of my lenses .

Feedback

I live in a magnificent state where the suns shines bright each and every day. It is so important to make use of a polarizing lens here . You can bring out wonderful colors with no glare. My favorite times to shoot are early morning an late afternoon when the sun begins to go down. I started my photography in 2002 after I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. This has been a wonderful opportunity over the years to learn my craft and to be able to capture moments in time. I believe that photography is a combination of having a great eye for composition as well as emotional responses to each picture . I think we learn over time to put much feelings into our work ,when we remember we want capture just this moment in time. So to me this means that photography is not just a picture but it has to be a combination of emotion and technical knowledge. When you combine these two it makes a moment not just a picture.
