Location
This photo was taken in front of Table Rock Mountain in Medford Oregon. This is one of the landmarks of our tiny little city, and I just love the barrenness of the landscape at certain times of the year, and the way the sun sets so perfectly.Time
We shot just before sunset, looking for basically this one shot. The sun sets very quickly, so we tried to time it. It ended up taking a bit longer than expected, because the grass was fairly thick and prickly, and we were covered in burs by the end.Lighting
I was really just going for that late evening light, where you can sense that the sun is going away soon, and there's sort of an eerie beauty to the light.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 5D mark ii and a Rokinon 35mm f/1.4.Inspiration
The inspiration for this photo came from the Emily of New Moon series, by L.M. Montgomery. The main character Emily imagines whimsical creatures in nature, one of which is the wind woman.Editing
I did basic editing in Lightroom and Photoshop on this photo, but nothing too extensive.In my camera bag
I rely on Primes! Primes primes primes! Haha. I have tried to shoot with zooms, and they make me crazy. I prefer the movement required to get just the right shot when shooting with primes. Currently in my bag, I have a 5D mark ii, Canon 135mm f/2, Canon 35mm f/1.4, Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 and the Sigma 50mm f/1.4. These are my go to lenses, and I find I'm usually perfectly happy with this little collection.Feedback
I would suggest looking for beautiful light. I know everyone talks about the "magic hour" which occurs before sunset, and it's for good reason. The light is very magical! I like to place my subject where the lighting on their face is even, usually with the light behind. Don't be afraid to keep moving your subject back and forth until it's just right.
