Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my home studio in Guildford. I am a self taught photographer so I tend to practice with a big cuddly toy until I get the two light set up and reflectors how I want them. When my subject turns up I know exactly where I wanted her and I looked like I knew what I was doing.

Time

N/a

Lighting

This was a two lights both with soft boxes set up with a large reflector to the side.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 30D with a 24-70 lens set at 30mm

Inspiration

I had recently had a baby myself and was lucky enough to have many pregnant and new Mum friends, I got to practice maternity and new born photography with them. This is one of the ones I entered in my local photographic society which I am a member of and I got a rare 10/10 in the Club (beginners class).

Editing

I use light room and do very little post processing. For this I did shoot in colour and converted to black and white, I adjusted the contrast and also cropped slightly.

In my camera bag

I have recently upgraded to a Canon 5Dii (as my much loved and trusted 30D was stolen). I love the 5D and my go to lens is my 24-70. I did recently splash out on a canon prime 100mm 2.8, but I'm not getting the portrait results that I expected with it ....yet.

Feedback

I set the studio up well before my subject arrives. If I have to use self timer to reconfigure the position and stregth of the flash I do many times. As a beginning many of my sessions are trial and error and I spend a lotos time checking the back of the camera to ensure it is correctly exposed and focused.
