Behind The Lens

Location
The photo was taken at Dania Beach Florida by the pier. One of the beaches I go to quite frequently for the early morning tranquility it gives me here in South Florida. Somedays I don't see anyone.
Time
I try to get to the beach and shoot sunrises as often as I can. It's a bit of an obsession of mine. Shortly after arriving, I noticed a group of pelicans close to the shore. I ran over and started shooting. It's funny because after sunrise I usually go out on my paddle boarding because the ocean is usually less choppy in the morning, but not this day!
Lighting
The early morning sun gives me the best light I could ask for. It gives more depth to images and no harsh shadows blocking out details.
Equipment
I shot this with a Pentax K50 weather resistant camera with a 50-200mm lens. This is my first DSLR camera. I wanted something weather resistant because I shoot on the beach. I used to shoot sunrises with my iPhone and got hooked. I'm still learning as I go, but I quickly put on my telephoto lens and brought my ISO to 400 so I could get a faster shutter speed. This shot makes me want a more powerful telephoto lens.
Inspiration
I hadn't seen a group of pelicans that close to shore with such calm water, so of course I had to go snap some pictures of them. I saw that this one had something yellow sticking out of his mouth, so I zoomed in on him and just started shooting a lot of pics. I didn't even realize I captured this shot until I downloaded it to my computer. It's was as if he was showing me his breakfast catch!
Editing
I did zoom in more so you could see the fish better and added some saturation because I wanted to show off the colors the pelican has. Usually they just look kind of brown and grey. I didn't realize how much color they have and wanted to show that off.
In my camera bag
As I'm still a beginner, what my kit came with. My Pentax K50 with a 18-55mm lens and 50-200mm lens, plus a tripod. I also have a Fuji FinePix XP70 waterproof camera just incase I see something I want to capture in the water. I'm hoping at some point I can afford camera housing for my DSLR and then have even more fun capturing the ocean.
Feedback
You have to act fast and shoot tons of shots when your subject is something in motion like birds. Go out often and plan ahead when you can. Have your settings on your camera ready and the lens you think you'll use. I was extremely lucky to have this guy open up his mouth to me and show me his catch!
