Behind The Lens

Location

This was a quick last minute shoot where I grabbed my daughter and we headed into the back yard.

Time

It was mid-day, so we had to go into the shade of a line of trees for more even light.

Lighting

Natural/Available light is my favorite, but regardless, this was so last minute that I literally grabbed my daughter and camera and went outside - so the images I took that day were available light only, no reflectors no flash.

Equipment

I shot with my Nikon D800, and 85mm lens at f1.6 and 1/1250.

Inspiration

I have four children, but my daughter Alex in particular is my muse - she is so beautiful, so emotive, and so willing to model how can I help but grab her every chance I can to get my camera on her?? On this day I was looking at her and seeing the growing independent person she is becoming and I wanted to capture that in a series of images. She was 9 when these images were taken, but to me she looks beyond her years. It is sad that my little girl is leaving me as she grows, but it's so amazing to get a glimpse into the future Alex.

Editing

I believe I did my standard post processing on this image - color correct, levels and some dodge/burn. Maybe some skin smoothing but I can't remember for sure.

In my camera bag

Typically my bag will contain my D800, my Nikon 24-70mm 2.8 and my 70-200mm 2.8 and several batteries. With that minimum amount of equipment I can pretty much cover anything I want to photography. However, after getting my 85mm 1.4, I am completely addicted to that lens for my portrait photography and for portrait shoots of individuals will more often than not use it exclusively.

Feedback

If you see something special in a subject, make a point to drop what you are doing and shoot! Especially as our kids grow, and you see something that you want to capture - those moments can be fleeting and you don't want to miss out. Don't make excuses like time of day - find the light you need whether it's in the shade of trees or a building and make it happen. If you need more light, supplement with a strobe or increase your ISO, but do it. Most of my favorite images have been the ones taken on a spur of the moment, rather than planned in detail in advance.
