Lighting was tricking. First illuminate the model with the modeling light then use strobe triggered with rear sync. I set my shutter speed for 1.3 sec and just as activated the shutter a asked the dancer to start a dance move with the veil and move her body towards the softbox. The modeling light was on high captured the blurring motion then the strobe fired just before the shutter closed to stop motion. One big tip, prefocus at the location where the dancer will be at the end of the shot. Oh, important the background is black with no light.Equipment
Camera, Sony A99; Lens, Sigma 24-70; camera stand;strobe with large softbox and grid. The model needs a light colored veil, something like a belly dancer would use.Inspiration
I want a photo that would really capture the fluid motion of a dancer. I did some research about long exposure and flash timing. Here is a video by Benjamin Von Wong where I got the tips on how to do this. https://youtu.be/ZlQhsFXZSmIEditing
The main post-processing was a bit of sharpening, brought down the blacks and shadows, increased the clarity and saturation. and adjust the white balance for a look that pleased me.In my camera bag
Sony A99, Sigma 24-70 lens, Sony 85mm, Sony 70-200mm, Sony speed light, variable ND filters, polarizers, Blackrapid strap, Lenspens.Feedback
PRE-FOCUS! Manual because the room will be fairly dark. Prefocus where the model will be at the end of the shot. When I do this again, I'll ask the model not to move her feet or to only move one away from the other. And PREFOCUS! Try using another light other than the modeling light for the initial illumination to see what other look you might get. The model can be moving before the shot but movement needs to continue during the duration of the shot. Try have the model vary the speed of movement during several shots.
