Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo of the great pyramids of Giza in Cairo, Egypt.

Time

This photo was taken in the late morning hours.

Lighting

This is all natural light near midday.

Equipment

My go to camera at that time was a Sony A65 with the 18-55 kit lens.

Inspiration

I was amazed with the immense size of the pyramids and the overall area. Seeing the people and camels in the foreground really put things into perspective.

Editing

Since I primarily shot RAW I do post processing with LIghtroom and Photoshop. For these types of photos post processing is normally limited to setting proper color temperature, cleaning up any "dust" or spots, and doing some sharpening. I prefer these to as editorial quality as possible.

In my camera bag

These days I normally have my Sony A99, a Sony 70-200 G lens, a Sony 85/2.8, a Sigma 105/2.8 Macro and a Sigma 24-70/2.8. Additionally I carry a Sekonic L-308 and plenty of extra batteries. I do a variety of different lights and modifiers as well.

Feedback

If anyone has an opportunity to visit the pyramids at Giza I would recommend an early morning visit. I wish I could have gotten this image earlier in the day so that I could've had longer shadows. My main advice though is to travel light. Plan ahead and only take what you need. I'd say no more than a backpack with one camera body with a wide angle lens, a medium telephoto, and extra batteries. Avoid using a flash in the places that allow interior access. Keep in mind that it's also a very dusty area.
