Facade detail

This is a detail image of the Cheese Grater car park's facade. Really like the aggressive and chaotic looking texture.

Behind The Lens

Location
This is a photo of the "Cheese Grater" car park, taken in Sheffield nearly one year ago, at the end of February 2014.
Time
I took this late in the afternoon, around 4-5 PM.
Lighting
Because it was getting close to sunset, the sun was quite low in the sky but the lighting was still harsh enough to create nice contrast and shadows on the metallic surface of the facade.
Equipment
Back then I was shooting my first DSLR, the Nikon D5100, with a Nikon 16-85mm VR lens. The shot was taken handheld, no need for a tripod as there was sufficient light available.
Inspiration
I am a final year architecture student, so naturally, when it comes to photography, I am attracted to everything architecture. It is one of my favourite subjects to shoot and the more unusual it looks the more inspiring I find it. This car park is a fine building from both an architectural and photographic point of view and it was on my list of buildings to see and shoot when visiting Sheffield.
Editing
Obviously, there was the conversion to black and white which I chose to go with because the facade had some green bits which I found a tad distracting, so I thought with black and white, the interplay between light, shadow and the metallic texture could be the focal point of the frame. Other than that, there was a bit of tweaking the contrast and clarity in Lightroom.
In my camera bag
At the moment I am shooting with a Nikon D700 and 3 lenses: the Nikon 18-35mm G, Nikon 50mm 1.8G and the Tamron SP 70-300mm VC USD.
Feedback
When talking about taking architectural photos, people immediately think wide angle. Whether it's an exterior shot or an interior one, they tend to think the more you can fit into the frame the better. This is by no means a wrong assumption, but there is so much to see beyond that, when moving in close. As with my photo, the beauty of this building was in the details, so my advice would be to zoom in and find those details and textures which make a building unique.
