Great shot, awesome camera position. A picture that tells a story, a sad one but a story all the same. Excellent

Behind The Lens

Location

This HDR photo was taken at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in north St. Louis shortly before it collapsed. The photo was purchased by the St. Louis Community College and is displayed at the Meramec campus.

Time

Taken in early afternoon to take advantage of the light coming in through the windows.

Lighting

The slanting beams of light were important to get the sense of hopefulness within a scene of decayed beauty.

Equipment

Seven exposures taken on a tripod with a Canon L series 17mm lens.

Inspiration

The light and the decay.

Editing

HDR to gain a wider dynamic range

In my camera bag

As little as possible. Modern DSLR cameras enable the photographer to do more with less.

Feedback

Always go with a group with an experienced leader when engaging in Urbex. The leader went in first to be sure there were no homeless people and had us leave early as he didn't like the amount of collapse we encountered. The collapsed roof seen in the photo was intact when he had checked three days prior. The building collapsed entirely several months later with no injuries.
