Behind The Lens

Location

We were on a family vacation in Maine and I took this in Bar Harbor.

Time

This is one of my favorite shots from my vacation to Maine. My one year old son woke up extra early and we went for a walk so we wouldn't wake up the rest of the family in the hotel room. At first, all I wanted to do was go back to sleep. As soon as I walked outside and saw the heavy fog over the harbor, I grabbed the camera bag and tripod and off we went! It was about 6:00 in the morning, June 2012.

Lighting

This capture was all about being at the right place at the right time! The light was perfect bouncing off the fog. I am a self taught photographer so I am still learning about lighting, but this worked great for me!

Equipment

I used a Canon 7D and a 24-105 4L set to 24mm. Definitely used a tripod!

Inspiration

The large number of lobster boats in the harbor combined with the for were the big inspirations for this photo. It was such a peaceful morning and we were the only ones up at this hour. It was like the calm before the storm.

Editing

I use Lightroom for all my post processing and I love it! I am a mom of 2 with another on the way and I work full time as a dentist so I have not found the time to learn to use photoshop yet. One day!

In my camera bag

I don't have much time to do a lot of landscape photography, I mostly just take pictures of my kids. My favorite lens is the canon 50mm 1.4. I always have it with me. My favorite walk-around lens that I always carry is the Canon 24-105mm 4L.

Feedback

To capture something like this you have to be willing to get up at the crack of dawn. I am usually not that willing so I don't get too many of these. I love sleep! A tripod is essential at this hour also. This was shot at 1/25 sec f22 so there is no way this would work handheld.
