Location
This photograph was taken in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, which is located in northeast Minnesota. This is a beautiful area of lakes and woods that can only be traversed by canoe.
Time
I took this shot at around 8 o"clock in the morning. It was autumn, and in this northern locale, it was also quite cool.
Lighting
When I woke up at daybreak, there was a very heavy fog lying over this lake I was camped on. While it was a beautiful morning, the opportunities for any landscape photos were limited. Visibility was limited to about 100 feet. But as the sun got a little higher in the sky, the fog started to thin out a little, and the sun started to show its"self through the fog.
Equipment
This was photographed with a Nikon N90 and a Nikon 24-50 zoom. The camera was mounted on a sturdy Gitzo tripod, and as I always use in landscape photography, a remote cable release.

Inspiration
I was cruising the shoreline in a canoe on this calm foggy morning. I really enjoy photography in foggy weather. The fog just creates such a mood. The sun was starting to burn through the fog when I saw this tree lying in the water. From the shoreline the tree was pointing right towards the sun. I knew that this would be a great opportunity. It was necessary to pull the canoe on shore and set up my tripod here at the base of the tree. While it was necessary to move around a little to get the exact location to get the distant treeline and the branches to balance just right, the composition was pretty straightforward.
Editing
The only post processing that was necessary with this photo was to brighten up the bottom of the frame just a little bit.
In my camera bag
I carry a Nikon d7100. My lenses include a Nikon 18-55 zoom, a Nikon 75-300 zoom, a Sigma 70-210 zoom. I also keep a Tokina 300 2.8 nearby for situations that it is practical. I carry a Nikon 1.4 telextender that can be used in combination with my longer zooms, and a 36mm extension tube. I also have a Nikon D500 close up lens. This equipment allows me a number of different combinations for macro work. I always have a remote cable release and a spare. Also, I keep 2 20 inch reflectors in my bag.
Feedback
I love to get out in the fog. The fog creates mood, and it has the ability to isolate a subject. There are certain conditions that one should always be out with the camera. Foggy weather is one of them. This is a photograph that could not be planned for ahead of time. One must have their camera ready, to keep their eyes and mind open, and always look at angles. All of our best photos are all about perspective, and the light. The next foggy morning a great photo may be right outside your door!
