Behind The Lens

Location

The guitar was shot in the studio. The stars obviously were shot from a telescope as was the moon. The planet was CG.

Time

all studio and post production.

Lighting

I matched the lighting as if it was coming from a star off to the right of the photo.

Equipment

Nikon D800 camera for the guitar. three strobes in the studio.

Inspiration

looking at the guitar shot I had done for a photo ad I pre-visualized the concept of the final project.

Editing

It was an after the fact shot of compositing the shots together in photoshop in layers and adding a light source. When I looked at the guitar shots I had done for an ad, I liked this one for it's lines and composition. I then visualized the planets and stars and created around the guitar.

In my camera bag

that depends on the job. generally my Nikon D800, 15mm Zeiss, 50mm Zeiss, 85mm Zeiss and a Nikon 70-200 zoom 2.8, I have a grip on the Nikon with two extra batteries, 4 CF cards, and 4 SD cards both Lexar, sensor cleaning kit, Nikon flash, and a go pro.

Feedback

This type of photography is mainly a post project. It takes more time in photoshop then shooting the shots. there's a lot of thought and re thinking and then compositing the images. This one is a more simple one compared to some of the other ones I have worked on, or maybe they get a little easier the more you produce. The advice would be to experiment and don't hold back. Be creative and try what ever comes to mind. I have a hundred or so projects sitting in files I have never finished, maybe they did not work, or ill finish them later, or the creative in my mind was not there yet? Keep trying, if it doesn't work, move on and try again later.
