Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in an abandoned mill in Preston, Lancashire, North West England.

Time

It was taken on a late afternoon in August

Lighting

The light is sunlight bounced onto Carla by using a 2m x 1m reflector

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3s with a 24 - 70 f/2.8 lens

Inspiration

Carla just looked right posed against the decaying wall with the reflected sunlight adding warmth to an otherwise cold scene

Editing

I added contrast and shifted a few colours using curves in Photoshop

In my camera bag

I have a Nikon D3s and D300 with 24-70, 70-200, 50mm and 90mm macro lenses plus a Fuji X-Pro1 and Fuji X-E1 with various Fuji lenses. I usually carry 2 speed lights; one Nikon and one Metz

Feedback

Look for contrasts - they're everywhere. A pretty girl in a gritty location is always a winner. It's always tempting to use strobes but try to use available light - in this case a reflector has softened harsh sunlight and added warmth
